Ellie parked in her usual spot near the side entrance of Charleston PD. The lot was full as one patrol shift wound down and another prepared to head to the streets.

She checked her watch, surprised the time was already after four. “That took longer than I thought it would.”

“But it was fascinating, finding that body, even if it was evil as they come.” Clay walked a few steps ahead of her to open the door, scowling when the automatic lock prevented him from turning the handle.

Ellie scanned her badge, opened the door, and held it for him.

“Thanks.”

“Any time.” They fell into step, walking side by side down the wide hallway toward the elevators. Ellie lowered her voice. “We may have found more evidence, but now there are more questions than answers.”

Clay pressed the call button for the elevator. “That’s part of the fun, Detective Kline. The more questions there are, the more interesting the hunt for the truth becomes.”

“Too bad we can’t interrogate this bad guy.”

Clay leaned against the railing as the elevator lurched upward. “At least he can’t lie and send us on a wild-goose chase.”

“Or can he? This isn’t exactly the most direct route to solving these crimes. We still don’t know who most of the victims are, and now we have a mystery victim who seems to have meant more than all the others. Even dead, Tucker Penland has caused quite a bit of tail chasing.”

“Once we solve the case, it will all make sense.”

Ellie shook her head as the elevator dinged, and the doors rattled open on the track. “The plethora of cold cases in the evidence locker beg to differ.”

“They’ll get solved.” Clay followed her to the Violent Crimes Unit and rested his hand on the door handle, getting in a final word before opening the door. “Now that they have an intelligent and dedicated detective in their corner, those victims will get the justice they deserve.”

Her cheeks warmed at the compliment, though she was glad he hadn’t said it within earshot of the other detectives. Some of the tension between her and the other detectives had faded in the past few months, but there was still the underlying belief that Ellie’s family name and connection to Chief Johnson had helped her climb her way up through the ranks. Ellie gritted her teeth, holding back a derisive snort at the thought. If anything, Chief Johnson had made her work even harder to prove her worth.

The bullpen was quieter than normal as the dayshift detectives hurried through the last of their paperwork so they could leave for the weekend by five. Detectives Decker and Shaw sat together at one desk, Shaw reading a handwritten report and pausing every few lines for Decker, who typed it up with his index fingers. Ellie wondered why neither man had bothered to take a typing class, if only to spare themselves the torture of henpecking countless reports, sometimes staying late just to finish paperwork.

Ellie knew why. Like everything else they did, Decker and Shaw weren’t interested in change.
